About this tool

Designing a cover that prints correctly starts with the right measurements. This free book cover template generator builds your full wraparound layout, front, spine and back, from your trim size, page count and paper stock, with 3mm bleed added on every edge. Whether you are designing in InDesign, Affinity or Canva, you get a precise book cover template to work to so nothing is cropped at the trim.

Get the cover spread wrong and your spine text drifts or your artwork is cut off. This full cover dimensions tool calculates spine width from your page count and paper, then assembles the complete spread, including the wrap allowance hardbacks need. It works just like a KDP cover template, but tailored to your UK printer's specification, so your file is ready to drop your design straight in.

  • Finalise your page count before designing; it changes the spine width.
  • Keep spine text clear of the edges, especially on thin spines.
  • Extend all background art fully into the 3mm bleed.
How it works
  1. 01

    Choose trim and binding

Select your finished book size and whether it is paperback or hardback. Hardback adds a turn-in wrap allowance around the case automatically.

  2. 02

    Add pages and paper

Enter your page count and paper stock. The tool calculates spine width from these, since thicker paper and more pages mean a wider spine.

  3. 03

    Get your dimensions

See the total spread width and height, spine and bleed, ready to set up your cover document at the exact size your printer needs.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I work out my full cover dimensions?
Take your trim width twice for front and back, add the spine width, then add bleed on all outer edges. Hardbacks also need a wrap allowance. This generator does the maths for you from your trim size, page count and paper, giving you the exact spread size to design to.
What is bleed and why do I need it?
Bleed is extra artwork, usually 3mm, that extends beyond the trim line. It ensures that when the cover is cut, no thin white edges appear if the cut shifts slightly. Always extend background colours and images into the bleed area rather than stopping them exactly at the trim.
How is the spine width calculated?
Spine width depends on page count and paper thickness, since each leaf adds caliper. More pages or heavier stock make a wider spine. Hardbacks also include board allowance. This tool calculates it automatically; our dedicated Book Spine Width Calculator shows the figure in both millimetres and inches.
Can I use this as a KDP cover template?
The principles are identical, front, spine, back and bleed in one spread, but each printer has its own exact spine and wrap requirements. Use this generator for a UK short-run printer's specification. If you are publishing through KDP, also check their template against these dimensions before you finalise.
Should I design my cover as a single spread?
Yes. Printers need the full cover as one flat spread, with the back on the left, spine in the centre and front on the right, plus bleed. Designing separate files for front and back risks misalignment. Set up one document at the total dimensions this generator gives you.
